This neo-medieval-style wood engraving depicts Saint Louis enthroned in front of what could be interpreted as either the seat of earthly royal power or of a heavenly Jerusalem.

The king wears a crown and his halo melts into the surrounding architecture. He holds a scepter, symbolic of power, while his right hand gesticulates the Christian benediction. These elements depict the intertwined nature of temporal and spiritual power during medieval times. A fleur de lys, symbol of the French kings and of the trinity, blossoms underneath him.

Inspired by medieval illumination, this engraving is symbolically charged. By studying the shapes and symbols depicted, the viewer is offered a glimpse into another world.
